humalog vs novolog

I've had better blood sugar #s the last two days and I'm wondering if part of the reason is my switch back to humalog. When I first started on shots, I started with humalog and it worked well for me. Soon after I started getting my pump supplies through a medical company, they told me the only kind of insulin they could cover and ship was novolog. I was hesitant to switch, but my endo told me that insulin is pretty much the same...they all serve the same purpose, so I decided to switch to novolog because it was easier to get a 3 months supply and not worry about getting prescriptions and going to the pharmacy.

I don't know if it's a coincidence that I've had a harder time managing my diabetes since I switched to novolog...I am in no way blaming it because I know the bigger issue was me becoming more lax with my diet and not working out like I used to, but I've noticed these last 2 days have been a lot better for me. I haven't waited 15-20 min to eat; it seems to kick in right away whereas with novolog it seemed like I needed to wait a while for it to make a difference. But, I've also worked out 3 times this week, so I'm sure that helps a lot. I'll have to wait a while to see how my numbers are over the next few weeks, but it may be that humalog just works better for me. And if so, I want to kind of kick myself for ever using novolog!

I tried apidra once, but I don't remember how it worked for me. Now I'm curious what other people use and how it works for them. I never really thought about it until my insulin from the medical company finally ran out (as of last year, they no longer ship insulin). I didn't even think about having my endo write a prescription for insulin so that I could stockpile it, but oh well. My shipment lasted a long time, and when I was down to the last bottle, I decided to have my endo write an Rx for humalog.

This post is kind of boring, but I guess that's good sometimes. My numbers have been good, I worked out more this week than I have in months, and I am feeling a lot more positive! Nothing bad to report at the moment. :)

  1. Way to go! :) I don't know, but I am sure different insulins could act differently, so that combined with your working out could have done the trick. Whatever it is, it's good it's working :) as always with D take the good while you have it since it is always changing :)))

  2. OK...Joe used Humalog and now we are on Apidra AND love IT! I think it smooths out the variances a bit. Is it magic? NO. But, do things seem better? YES. Could it be he is nearing his 8th birthday and the MDs told me that his BGs would not be so labile once he hit 7 or 8? Possibly. I am also noticing that we are getting 3 full days out of our pump sites on Apidra. We were only getting 36 to 48 hours out of our Humalog sites?! WTH...I don't know if that was a coincidence or what...but I am doin' the happy dance fo' sho'.

  3. It's interesting to read other people's experiences with different insulin. We've been on humalog since dx. Actually, we were on diluted and switched to full strength a few months ago. We notice a HUGE difference between the diluted and full strength, even though we're "technically" giving her the same amount of insulin.

  4. My son was on Novolog since dx then we switched to Apidra a couple months ago, felt it tamed some of those spikes. Last week, when I went for a new vial, I grabbed Novolog instead and his numbers are still looking great so who knows if it is just his body or the different insulin. I wish it were easier to determine. But D never is!! Glad you're feeling better though. :-)

  5. Thanks all! It seems to be taming out those spikes a LOT better than novolog. Hope it isn't a fluke!

  6. Different insulins definately work differently.. Im glad you are having success finding something that works better for you. We switched from Levemir/Novorapid, to Protaphane, then to Lantus and Back to the original combination....all in one year. (we are on MDI). They all have their plus/ and minuses. We are all so hesitant to blame the action profile of the insulin or our regime, and super quick to blame our own management skills. Look forward to seeing how it pans out for you.

  7. I have had the same experience. I have been using Humalog for over 10 years (in my pump)and my insurance just stopped covering it. I switched to Novolog and have had lots of extreme highs. In my last reservoir change, I filled it with my last bottle of Humalog and my glucose readings were so much better! Not a single unexplained spike. I am back to the Novolog because I ran out of Humalog and the high blood sugars are back. I always wake up high in the morning, which I never did with Humalog. Frustrating!
